The Central Ohio Down Syndrome Society (CODSS) is an independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization started in March 2009 to forward three critical issue areas: 1) Down syndrome research; 2) legislation; and 3) parent/family services. Although the organization has been operating for less than one year, the group has made astonishing gains on behalf of the Down syndrome community:
- CODSS is nationally credited as the only local Down syndrome group in the country to convene it’s own scientific research advisory panel.
- CODSS is nationally credited as the only local Down syndrome group in the country to have its own state/federal legislative lobbyist. Just recently, the National Down Syndrome Society applauded CODSS for its direct role in securing the support and agreement of Ohio U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown to co-sponsor the Trisomy 21 Translational Research Parity Act that was just introduced in Congress. The Bill seeks to increase federal funding for Down syndrome research.
- CODSS has developed enduring strategic partnerships with nationally acclaimed research institutions, including Nationwide Children’s Hospital, the Davis Heart & Lung Institute at The Ohio State University, and the Down Syndrome Research & Treatment Foundation.
- CODSS is the first and only Down syndrome organization to help families fill the gap in county provided special needs services and therapies by offering members free access to regular health & wellness clinics, and group physical therapy sessions. And it is now working to expand services to include member access to speech and occupational therapies as well.
- CODSS is the only local Down syndrome group in the state directly engaging state legislators on potential legislative initiatives that will protect and advance the rights of Down syndrome families.
This is what CODSS has accomplished in just one year. Just think how much more we will accomplish in the year ahead with your support.
The future depends on what we do in the present. Please support Central Ohio Down Syndrome Society in our effort to educate through research, strengthen with advocacy, empower through achievement, and believe that together, we can make a difference.
